About the app

What Storm does

Storm is a tropical cyclone tracker. Hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones are the same kind of storm with different names in different oceans, and Storm follows all of them, using the advisories of the US National Hurricane Center and the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System, which covers every ocean basin.

Each storm shows where it is now, where the forecasters expect it to go over the next days, how strong its winds are and how close its forecast track comes to you. Every advisory says who issued it and when, because forecasts are updated every few hours.

Reading the cone

The cone of uncertainty shows where the centre of the storm is likely to be. It is not the size of the storm: strong winds and heavy rain often reach far outside it. Storm draws the cone with the forecast points and their times.

Categories, explained

A tropical storm becomes a hurricane or typhoon when its sustained winds reach 119 km/h (74 mph). The Saffir-Simpson scale then rates hurricanes from Category 1 to 5 by wind speed. Storm shows the category with what that wind can do.

Not a warning service

Storm shows public advisories and forecasts. It does not replace official warnings or evacuation orders. If a storm is coming, follow your national weather service and local authorities.

Where the data comes from

  • NOAA National Hurricane Center: Advisories, forecast tracks and cones for the Atlantic and eastern and central Pacific
  • GDACS: Tropical cyclones and alert levels in every ocean basin
  • NASA EONET: Open severe-storm events worldwide
  • Open-Meteo: Wind and rain forecasts at your place, place search

Every event shows its source and how old it is. If a feed can't be reached, the app keeps showing the last good copy, marked as out of date. There is no account or tracking. Privacy policy.

Good to know

Storm questions

What is the difference between a hurricane, a typhoon and a cyclone?

Nothing but the ocean. They are all tropical cyclones: hurricanes in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, typhoons in the western Pacific, and cyclones in the Indian Ocean and South Pacific. Storm follows them all.

How often are the forecasts updated?

Regular advisories come every six hours, with extra updates when a storm threatens land. Each storm in the app shows when its advisory was issued.

Is Storm an official warning service?

No. It shows public advisories and forecasts. For warnings and evacuation orders, follow your national weather service and local authorities.

Where does the data come from?

From the US National Hurricane Center for the Atlantic and eastern and central Pacific, GDACS for every ocean basin, NASA's EONET natural-event feed, and Open-Meteo for the wind forecast at your place.
